Originally opened in 2008 in northern Chile, Tierra Atacama (part of Tierra Hotels) has become an established upscale option in the town of  San Pedro de Atacama thanks to its beautiful architecture, views of Licancabur volcano and the peaks of the Andes, and the hotel’s friendly service. The property is now undergoing a major refresh, with a reopening April 1; bookings are available now.

From a total of 32 original rooms, Tierra Atacama will reopen with 28, making Tierra Atacama more exclusive and elegant without losing the relaxed ambience of all the Tierra properties.

From outside, the main central area with terraces and the pool will remain much as they are now, as will the 14 Poniente rooms and two apartments. However, the front “line” of the Oriente rooms will become four suites and eight Oriente rooms, complete with open, spacious terraces to make the most of the views of Licancabur volcano.

For the 14 Poniente rooms, looking out toward the Salt Mountain Range, Tierra Atacama will extend the terraces of these rooms and focus the view on the Salt Mountains, as well as redo the entrance space for more privacy and exclusivity.

The Oriente rooms will become peaceful, luxurious spaces, with wood-clad walls; private and fresh new bathrooms; and open, spacious terraces to make the most of the views of the volcano.

Four deluxe suites will feature a modern bathroom with a freestanding bathtub, a dressing room and a cozy living area with a desk, as well as extensive floor-to-ceiling windows opening to the terrace. Each suite will have its own plunge pool and cozy fireplace for cool desert evenings.

The three-bedroom, two-bath apartments will accommodate up to six guests, with sophisticated and relaxed spaces, a private terrace, and a plunge pool.

The Tierra Patagonia property, in the southern Chilian region of Patagonia, 2,600 miles south of Tierra Atacama, starts the season with newly refurbished suites in three different color schemes. The hotel also debuts a brand-new bar space with great views.

High-Spirited Hong Kong: The Dynamic Hub Embraces Its Maritime History and Culture

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.

Review: InterContinental Barcelona

When searching for a place to stay in Barcelona, I was picky. I wanted a well-situated hotel to access all the city has to offer and to serve as a respite from the hustle and bustle of the Spanish hot spot. My search led me to InterContinental Barcelona.

Why Japan Is Best Explored by Sea with Princess

Japan is a destination that rewards repeat visits because no two regions — or seasons —  feel quite the same. One moment, you’re wandering through centuries-old geisha districts in Kanazawa. The next, you’re watching neon reflections dance across Tokyo streets long after midnight.
