Uber updated its app with new safety features for when rides are unexpectedly interrupted. There’s now a panic button for drivers to call police quickly and discreetly.
The new feature, Ride Check, sends alerts to drivers and passengers when an unplanned stop occurs, whether due to a crash or other cause — intended to protect passengers and drivers from attacks.
“This technology can … flag trip irregularities beyond crashes that might, in some rare cases, indicate an increased safety risk,” according to Uber.
“For example, if there is a long, unexpected stop during a trip, both the rider and the driver will receive a Ride Check notification to ask if everything is OK. They can let us know through the app that all is well, or take other actions like using the emergency button or reporting the issue to Uber’s critical safety line.”
Drivers in the United States and Canada now have a Safety Toolkit, allowing direct 911 calls from the Uber app.
Uber also works on voice activation for hands-free use of the app for drivers, and said it’s working to protect passengers by hiding rider pick-up and drop-off addresses from drivers’ trip histories.
