My local Skokie Police Department isn’t just the talk of the town. Thanks to its lip sync video, it went viral.
The lip sync challenge started in Texas in June. The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office shared a video of deputy Alexander Mena, stating he had “a mean lip sync not many can beat.” Other law enforcement agencies took on that challenge, and the latest internet craze was born. There have been several good video answers to the challenge, but the Skokie Police Department set the bar!
The five-minute video starts with an officer lip-syncing the start of the Fresh Prince of Bel Air theme while on a basketball court. From there, the Skokie PD takes us on a playful romp through another 10 songs before finishing strong with “YMCA” (partially filmed from a drone) and a challenge from Skokie police chief Tony Scarpelli to neighboring police departments.
The Skokie Police Department effort stands above the pack for several reasons. It incorporates more songs and more musical styles than other videos. There are more participants, including many non-officers.
The video’s success can be seen with more than 2 million views on YouTube. More importantly, I see it on a first-hand basis, as residents have greeted officers with various song snippets from the video. It has made everyone a little closer and friendlier in the area. It might be my Skokie bias speaking, but I feel like “We Are the Champions,” at least of this challenge.
