Delta Air Lines is the first North American airline to receive Airbus’s new A350. It received the first plane last month.

It’s one of 25 new A350s Delta ordered to replace its fleet of Boeing 747-400s. The plane offers higher-end, in-cabin amenities and is more fuel-efficient.

“Our new flagship A350 fits well in Delta’s long-haul network, combining an exceptional customer experience with strong operating economics and fuel-efficiency as we retire older, less-efficient aircraft,” said Ed Bastian, CEO, Delta.

The A350 is expected to provide a 20 percent improvement in the airline’s operating cost per seat over the Boeing 747-400. It will also be the airline’s first to be fitted with its new Delta One first-class suites, which come with a full-height door for complete privacy.

The new plane has 32 Delta One suites and 48 Delta Premium Select spots. The main cabin holds 226 passengers in the largest economy seats in Delta’s fleet. The economy seats feature memory foam cushions.

The plane will serve the airline’s Detroit (DTW)–Tokyo (NRT) route beginning Oct. 30. It will then fly mostly Pacific routes including Seoul (ICN) and Beijing (PEK).
