It’s wildflower season in Western Australia, with 12,000 different species on show through August. A full 60 percent of them can only be found here, with many still in bloom till November. By September, the color has found its way to Perth’s botanical gardens, parks and nature reserves. Some of the best viewing spots for varieties such as Kangaroo Paws and rare orchidsinclude Lane Poole Reserve, Cape Range National Park, Fitzgerald River National Park and Coalseam Conservation Park.

And speaking of parks, Australia’s soon-to-be largest national park is well on its way to opening. The new park is located adjacent to the northern edge of the King Leopold Range Conservation Park, which will be renamed the Wilinggin Conservation Park and include the landmarks Bell Creek and Lennard River Gorge.

Meanwhile, in the state’s oldest wine region of Swan Valley, a selection of food and beer tours have been introduced as part of the new Cider and Ale Trail. Located about 20 minutes from the city of Perth, the route takes in local brews and craft beers, nine breweries and cider producers, plus wine and chocolate. Near the towns of Balingup, Bridgetown and Nannup, the Blackwood River Valley Food Trail includes vineyards, boutique farms, breweries and artisan food producers. Stop in at Chestnut Brae, where you can sip Australia’s first sweet chestnut ale.
