Holiday Travelers Reduce Risk of In-Flight Medical Problems

An estimated 40,000 plus in-flight medical events occur worldwide on commercial airlines each year. Holiday travelers can take steps to reduce the risk of a potential health problem occurring during flights.

If a medical event occurs, emergency evaluation and medical care are provided by a physician volunteer on the flight.

“Many in-flight medical events occur when a traveler has a serious medical condition that is aggravated by airline travel,” explained Dr. Raymond Bertino, clinical professor of radiology and surgery, University of Illinois College of Medicine. “If you have a serious illness, check with your doctor to be sure air travel does not pose an increased risk.”

Bertino is the lead developer of airRx, the only smartphone app to prepare and help physicians volunteering to assist fellow travelers experiencing a medical event on a flight. Physicians who volunteer to assist, can help travelers use the app to access 23 scenarios of the most common medical emergencies. The app provides concise treatment algorithms and quick reference information to help treat and evaluate the patient. AirRx provides a real-time checklist and handbook to improve the way emergent medical air situations are addressed. The app is provided by a non-profit organization and are available for full use in Airplane mode. Download the app at the Apple Store or Google Play store for $4.99

“Staying hydrated is essential, especially on long flights,” said Bertino. “I myself experienced a medical event while traveling because I neglected to follow that simple advice.”

Review: Sushi by Scratch at Grand Hyatt Deer Valley

Husband-and-wife team Phillip Frankland Lee and Margarita Kallas-Lee made their mark by reinventing the term “hidden gem” through their surprising and intentional collection of destination restaurants. While they launched the original Scratch Kitchen in 2013, an expired lease prompted them to relocate to an unassuming strip mall in suburban Encino in 2015 and rename it Scratch Bar & Kitchen. Even at a time when the San Fernando Valley was not known for innovative 5-star dining, the Lees’ concepts gathered such a strong buzz that discerning diners cheerfully followed them “over the hill.”
