Art is alive and thriving in Liege, where a host of museums provide plenty in the way of cultural diversion. At the Museum of Walloon Art, Belgian artists from the 19th and 20th centuries including Magritte, Delvaux and Lombard are showcased. More than 2,500 paintings and sculptures are housed in a gorgeous historic building with an open-air courtyard.

At the Ansembourge Museum, once a private villa built in 1740, carved and inland woodworks from the 18th century are on display, along with porcelain, watches, chandeliers, tapestries and curtains constructed from leather. The Modern Art Museum is a trove of modern and contemporary works by Picasso, Gauguin, Monet and Chagall. Often referred to as Europe’s most beautiful museum venue, it was thoughtfully renovated in 1993. Set to open in spring 2016, the new Boverie Museum in Liege will partner with the Louvre in Paris on three separate art exhibitions.
