The Transportation Security Administration gets more than its fair share of criticism, but a recent series of events at Orlando International Airport should give even the most pro-TSA travelers pause.

The Orlando Sentinel reported Tuesday a transgender woman claims she was harassed and detained at the airport when the security body scanner detected an “anomaly” on her body.

Based on the appearance of individual passengers, TSA security agents press a pink or a blue panel to set the machine to scan a female shape or a male shape. Agents visually identified Shadi Petosky, a transgender woman, as female and calibrated the scanner accordingly.

Petosky immediately reported her transgender status to TSA agents who subsequently did two pat-downs, examined her luggage and detained her in an empty room causing her to miss her flight. At one point, Petosky Tweeted an agent advised her to “get back in the machine as a man or it was going to be a problem.”

In a statement released early Tuesday morning, the TSA said the agency had “determined that the evidence shows our officers followed TSA’s strict guidelines.”

As humiliating as this series of events — compounded by the insensitivity of some of the TSA agents — was for Petosky, it begs a practical observation: Our 21^st-century global community is far more complicated than “pink” or “blue.” Organizations like the TSA must adjust their practices to real-world standards.
