London Heathrow is counting on new initiatives to get passengers and airport out of cars and onto public transportation.
Speaking at the Runways UK conference, John Holland-Kaye, CEO, Heathrow International Airport, described Heathrow as the United Kingdom’s best connected transport hub. Boasting the U.K.’s only dedicated non-stop express airport rail-link and free travel zone, Heathrow is also home the U.K.’s busiest bus and coach station and it’s the only airport served by London Underground stations.
The five-point plan aims to:
- Make public transport easier and more attractive for passengers;
- Ensure major rail projects are prioritized and delivered;
- Welcome more public transport services;
- Shift airport employees on to public transport;
- Help local authorities deliver their local transport priorities.
In the past decade, Heathrow has spent almost $40 million on projects to increase public transport use and reduce car dependency.
