Spring Events In The Czech Republic

May 13, 2015
Daily / Exclusive

Take a spin through Plzeň in the Czech Republic and experience a host of events that are part of the European Capital of Culture 2015 project. Begin your exploration at the Brewery Museum, complete with medieval cellars, replica village pub interior from the end of the 19th century, steam brewery model, display of drinking vessels used throughout the ages, and an eclectic collection of beer-related items and novelties. Next head underground beneath the city’s cobblestoned streets into a collection of workshops, malt houses, cellars, wells and lengthy labyrinth of tunnels and corridors dating to the 14th century.

Above ground, visit the Church of St. Bartholomew and climb the 301 steps to the church tower overlooking the city’s main square. On a clear day, even the peaks of the mountains in the Šumava region are visible. Before you leave, have a meal at the Na Parkánu Taproom located in a historic structure adjacent to the city’s ramparts. Views of hop fields set the mood for traditional dishes including goulash soup and pork knuckle prepared in Plzeň beer, served with mustard, horseradish and “chodský” cabbage. If you’re in town the week of Aug. 2–8, don’t miss the festival of carvers displaying their works at nearby Křivoklát Castle.

Now’s the Time to See Giza, the Nile and Beyond

All archaeology-obsessed eyes turned hopefully toward Egypt earlier this year when the highly anticipated Grand Egyptian Museum outside Cairo finally began welcoming visitors after construction delays, funding roadblocks and political upheaval in the region (among other factors) conspired to keep things delayed for many long years. The museum’s cherry on the top is slated to open this summer, with the July opening of the museum’s 20-plus-years-in-the-making Tutankhamen galleries and accompanying cache of some 5,000 artifacts and treasures from the boy king’s tomb.

On the Road

As I write this letter, I am halfway across the Atlantic Ocean on my return from an epic golf trip in Ireland. The weather was magnificent: sunshine and no rain ... quite unusual by Irish standards. We were happy to leave our rain gear and extra warm clothing in the hotel rooms as we headed out every day.
