Welcome to New Zealand, but think twice about hopping in your rental car after a long flight. In a recent survey conducted by Herald-Digipoll, more than 75 percent of New Zealanders surveyed were in favor of requiring driving tests for arriving international travelers or banning car rentals for travelers straight off a long flight.

One-third of those surveyed said international travelers arriving from countries where they drive on the right-hand side of the road should take both written and practical driving tests before getting the green light to take the wheel in New Zealand. Twenty-seven percent said testing should to extend to all arriving travelers, except Australians.

The survey follows concern over the number of fatal or serious injury crashes involved foreign drivers, including two triple fatality smashes. In 2013, overseas drivers were found at fault in 75 percent of 538 injury crashes in which they were involved. Although failure to adjust to local conditions was blamed for seven fatal crashes, it was the suspected cause of just 26 percent of the injury crashes.

Despite the poll findings, officials favor education over testing; requiring road tests would be counter to New Zealand’s obligations under a United Nations convention on road traffic, which allows New Zealanders to drive in overseas territories including Australia, Britain, the United States, Canada and the European Union.
