Grand Hyatt Hong Kong

Jan 2, 2013
2014 / December 2014

Arrival/Check-in: My hotel experience began at the Hong Kong airport. I had arranged for a car from the hotel to pick me up and two young men were waiting for me when I arrived. One took my luggage while the other ran ahead to get the car, and in minutes I was in a Mercedes-Benz cruising into the city. At the hotel, my check-in was completed in the comfort of my guestroom. (20/20)

Guest Quarters: Premium hotels in Hong Kong know how to spoil their guests and the Grand Hyatt is no exception. My Grand Executive Harbor Suite included a living room, bedroom and marble bath. Both the living room and bedroom had a TV/entertainment area and workspace with wireless Internet access. The rooms were fresh, with light wood furniture and light earth tone colors; not my personal favorite, but the bathrooms offered a lovely contrast in stunning black and white marble.

On the Club Floor — one of the biggest I’ve seen — I enjoyed a beautiful buffet breakfast overlooking the harbor in the morning, tea and sweets in the afternoon and light hors d’oeuvres in the evening. I expected that such a grand space could serve food throughout the whole day, however when I asked for some tea and toast one afternoon I was told they were not able to deliver the toast during off-hours. (12/15)

Service/Amenities: My guestroom included 24- hour butler service, which was a great relief because I wasn’t feeling well when I checked in. Every so often during my stay the butler came to my room to check on me. He brought me tea, offered to call a doctor … anything to help. The concierge staff impressed me as well. The head concierge made me feel like a celebrity with the personal attention he gave me. (Coincidentally, there were a number of celebrities at the hotel that week.)

I took advantage of the spa, Plateau, twice during my visit. The serenity of the treatment rooms made me forget I was in the middle of the city, especially the dark marble room with its own Jacuzzi for post-treatment relaxation. I am also grateful to the spa for introducing me to Decléor Paris products. (45/45)

The Experience: Attached to the Hong Kong Convention Center, the Grand Hyatt has a great location for business. It houses eight restaurants, all offering top cuisine from Chinese to Italian and most overlooking the harbor, another elegant touch in an elegant hotel. (20/20)

Total Score: 96/100

By-the-cabin Yachting Redefines the Cruise Experience

I wish this day could last forever!” my windswept 9-year-old exclaimed, his voice soaring over the Mediterranean. He gripped the helm of a Bali 4.6 sailing catamaran off the coast of Marseille, his sun- bleached hair whipping in the salty breeze. The scent of the sea mingled with the aroma of warm baguettes drifting from the Côte d’Azur shoreline. Our captain, a seasoned sailor, subtly adjusted course, letting my son feel the exhilarating pull of the wind against the sails. As the waves lapped against the hull, I realized this was no ordinary vacation — this was freedom, unfiltered.
