The Peninsula New York

Jun 1, 2011
2011 / June 2011

Arrival/Check-in: It was a dreary New York City day when I arrived. The Peninsula bell staff eagerly assisted, helping me stay dry in the rainy conditions. They took my bag and personally escorted me to check-in, up a flight of stairs to the right and then to the left. Check-in was quick, and I was in my suite in no time. (28/30)

Guest Quarters: I was speechless when I entered my room — significantly larger than my friends’ NYC apartments at more than 1,050 square feet, a true luxury in the city. To the right of the double-door entry was the living area, with a desk in the corner. The TV, flanked by shelves and cabinets housing the minibar, sound system and other equipment, sat across from a couch, two chairs and a coffee table. A second chair and small table were tucked in the corner, and windows lined two of the three walls. On a small table, three house-made cupcakes greeted me. On the left of the entry was a small coat closet and powder room. Through another doorway was a dressing room with a large vanity area. Off the dressing area were three large rooms — a walk-in closet, the bathroom and bedroom. The king-sized bed provided two nights of peaceful slumber. The room also offered additional seating, a TV, nightstand and an iPod docking station. The bathroom was well equipped with two sinks, a large soaking tub with a wall-mounted TV and a rain shower. Exquisite! (29/30)

Services/Amenities: I had a glitch with the Internet (complimentary — a huge perk). My computer wouldn’t connect wirelessly. The front desk sent someone right away who set me up with a cord that worked perfectly. I used the fitness center, quite large for a hotel and fully staffed. Loads of equipment meet any travelers’ fitness needs. I enjoyed breakfast in Fives, the onsite fine-dining establishment. I had eaten there previously and recommend the restaurant. The Gotham Lounge serves an afternoon tea. The hotel spa is gorgeous. (38/40)

The Experience: The location perfectly suited my needs. Just off Fifth Avenue in Midtown, it placed me within walking distance of all the places I needed to be during my stay. Without a doubt, this property is one of my New York City favorites. The staff was friendly and my stay, from start to finish, was luxurious and comfortable.

Total Score: 95/100

Hotel Van Zandt Review

One step onto Austin’s Rainey Street and you’ll feel like you’ve joined the cool kids at the best playground in the city. Just behind the cottage bars, pint-sized skyscrapers soar. One of them, Hotel Van Zandt, the Rainey district's pièce de resistance, beckons with a song-like spirit —apropos because the independently owned property, rife with music motifs, was named after beloved singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt. Sixteen stories high, the hotel embodies Austin’s lust for music, manifesting with a vinyl corner; trumpet chandeliers; myriad musical references; replica vintage posters in frames; and its own live music venue, which doubles as its acclaimed restaurant, Geraldine’s. Don’t miss the mesmerizing installation of colorful origami-like birds composed from vinyl records that flitter from an old phonograph.
