The traditional game drive will never disappoint, but Zambia is rich in so many other experiences and sites, you won’t want to limit your trip to just a safari. With 73 ethnic groups and an abundance of cultural traditions, Zambia beckons visitors to unearth a side of the country rarely seen. From canoeing along the Zambezi to searching for rare birds, consider these five other ways to experience Zambia.
Learn About Lozi People in Mongu, Barotse Province
The Lozi people are an ethnic group indigenous to Zambia and call Mongu home. These people are known for their rich traditions and complex social structures. Learn about them at Nayuma Museum, offering an in-depth look into Lozi traditions through artifacts, clothing and narratives. The destination is also home to Mumwa Craft Association, a center displaying the region’s craftsmanship. You can even purchase handmade items directly from local artisans.
Take a Canoe Down Zambezi River
Blend adventure with wildlife on a canoeing safari along the Zambezi River. Offered through Victoria Falls Canoeing Company, this experience is available in both half-day trips and daily island-hopping adventures. Navigate past Zambezi’s hidden treasures, from crocodiles to hippos.
Go Microlighting Over Victoria Falls
See this spectacular waterfall from above with a microlight flight (aka the “Flight of Angels”). Tours are available as 15- or 30-minute flights, promising sweeping views of Victoria Falls, Zambezi River, Batoka Gorge, Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park and more. Flights are available from Livingstone’s Adventures.
Embark on a Walking Safari of South Luangwa National Park
Recognized for its walking safaris, South Luangwa National Park gives visitors the chance to explore the bush on foot alongside expert guides. You have a high likelihood of spotting leopards in trees or moving through the bush, as well as hippos, crocodiles and elephant herds. One of the best lodges for an overnight experience is Kafunta River Lodge, situated on the park’s edge.
Seek Out Rare Birds in Lake Bangweulu
Lake Bangweulu in northern Zambia is part of a vast wetland ecosystem of floodplains, swamps and open waters. Meaning “where the water meets the sky,” Lake Bangweulu is a haven for birdlife, including the endangered Shoebill, one of Africa’s most sought-after and distinctive birds. The park is also home to wattled cranes, saddle-billed storks and swamp flycatchers. You can see this and more on a boat safari, fishing excursion or guided walking tour, all available with stays at Shoebill Island Camp.

Oct 26, 2026Convenience, Comfort and Efficiency Drive Private Aviation Options
During “the Golden Age of Air Travel,” in the 1950s and ’60s, getting aboard an airplane was a special occasion, with passengers wearing their best outfits to suit the exclusive setting and lavish dining. This changed during the 1970s and into the 1980s, when commercial air travel became more democratized, thanks in part to the U.S. Airline Deregulation Act of 1978, and luxury was contained within business- and first-class cabins. In the last 30 years, as discount carriers found their audience, more shifts took place in major carriers’ premium cabins and lounges.

Oct 23, 2026The Flight Less Taken: Unsung Carriers Whisk You Away to Far-Flung Destinations
The miracle of flight feels slightly less miraculous these days. Endless delays, cramped seating and shortchanged amenities feel par for the course, and one can easily forget the wondrous fact that you’re hurtling above planet Earth, soaring above the clouds and across the skies to your destination of choice. In the olden days, you were limited to the fallibility of your outrigger canoe or horse-drawn carriage. It’s not hyperbolic to invoke the invention of the wheel when reminding oneself to stay calm and carry on in coach.
