Daily

It’s important to not just celebrate the Earth on Earth Day, but to celebrate the planet every day, even on travels. In Australia, various iconic locations across the country allow visitors to both enjoy natural wonders while still learning how to pave the way for a more sustainable future. Here are four experiences to add to your travels in Australia:

Australian Wildlife Journeys

A not-for-profit alliance, Australian Wildlife Journeys is comprised of more than a dozen mostly family-run wildlife tour operators across the country. This alliance sets a high standard in the world of wildlife guiding. Each operator provides an interpretive experience of wildlife in the wild, whether marine or terrestrial. Operators also aim to create a better future for Australia’s wildlife by raising the bar for wildlife tourism.

Small Batch Wine Tours

In South Australia, Small Batch Wine Tours offers small group and private tours of boutique producers in South Australia’s wine regions. Tours specifically focus on wine producers who leave a small impact on the environment. Matthew Kurko, owner and operator, Small Batch Wine Tours, seeks to reduce environmental impact through purchasing low-emission vehicles (with plans to transition to electric vehicles as soon as practical), sourcing renewable energy, reducing waste and recycling, and calculating and offsetting the business’s remaining emissions.

Sydney Opera House

Considered one of the most iconic landmarks in the world, Sydney Opera House, celebrating its 50th anniversary was designed by Jørn Utzon with nature and sustainability in mind. Initiatives include an innovative seawater cooling system. Sydney Opera House enacted its first Environmental Sustainability Plan in 2010 to find ways to reduce electricity, its largest source of carbon emissions. The building currently hopes to attain a 6 Star Green Star rating within the next year.

Passions of Paradise

Over in Queensland, Passions of Paradise has highlighted the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef to visitors over the last 30 years. The company recently noticed a growing trend among visitors: They want to play an active part in reef conservation. Passions of Paradise take guests out on a 98-foot catamaran for the chance to embark on guided snorkeling and diving adventures on the Outer Reef. Embracing eco-friendly initiatives, Passions of Paradise conducts citizen science by replanting broken pieces of living coral in special frames in coral nurseries on the sea floor. These nurseries currently house up to 4,000 nascent corals. Once the corals are established, they can be harvested and relocated to dive sites.

Hotel Nice Beau Rivage Review
