The property’s sustainability started from the ground up with its design elements. The resort was built on an existing sandbank encircling a coral reef on the North Malé Atoll. The ecosystem’s natural beauty inspired the designers’ vision and a marine team studied the conditions to ensure the design wouldn’t negatively impact the local coral reef. The resort also initiated a coral planting project, with plans to cover more than 65,000 feet. The resort relies heavily on solar power and the property recycles and purifies water.
The resort also utilizes sustainable practices with its culinary offerings. The seven on-site restaurants and bars use fresh produce from the on-site garden and offer a variety of plant-based menu options. The Ritz-Carlton Spa partners with wellness brand Bamford on an exclusive collection of organic body and skincare products.

The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands partners with several organizations focused on sustainability. Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ambassadors of the Environment program hosts numerous activities encouraging guests to learn more about the environment, including nature walks, dives and educational discussions. The resort’s Conservation Technology Hub marks the partnership with Loughborough University. Based on the resort, the research unit is a government-approved program that develops drone methods to search for plastics in the ocean and on beaches.
