A few days before our Texas trip, I received an email that the pool would be closed at NYLO Dallas Plano one evening during our stay for a private event. Upon our arrival, we spotted signs from our college alma mater welcoming guests. To our surprise, alumni were gathering at the hotel in anticipation of the next day’s championship football game.

Located 20 miles from downtown Dallas, the hotel is minutes from Dallas North Tollway and Sam Rayburn Tollway. The hotel offers free on-site parking and is pet-friendly. During our May visit, the restaurant and bar services were temporarily suspended due to the pandemic. The hotel does have a well-stocked pantry and can satisfy that midnight chocolate craving.

Last year, the hotel underwent extensive renovations. The hotel’s loft-style guestrooms are designed with exposed brick, concrete and ductwork. Each guestroom received new furnishings, including platform beds with Hilton mattresses, headboards, night stands, desks, televisions, lighting fixtures and vanities. The closet space is exposed to add more storage. Woven area rugs, drapery and art add a cozy element to the minimalist design.

Our third-floor, wheelchair-accessible guest oom with a roll-in shower was quiet and felt larger than its 300 square feet — probably due to the 10-foot-high ceiling. Free WiFi and an in-room safe are appreciated amenities.

The Plano area has plenty of restaurants, but we drove less than four miles to The Star — home of the Dallas Cowboys World Headquarters and practice facility. The 91-acre complex in Frisco includes a variety of dining options. While eating Neapolitan pizza, we watched our college team win the championship.

For these homesick Texans, the NYLO’s friendly staff and new reno made it a win.
