Well, to be fair, I don’t know if I can call us spontaneous because it took us three days to make the decision, but it was spontaneous for us! My last blog was about my mini-moon to Cape May, New Jersey, in August. There’s more to come in a future blog about some of the great restaurants we enjoyed during our stay, but probably at least three to four of them wouldn’t have been experienced had it not been for that “spontaneous” decision.

So what exactly did we do? Basking in our newlywed glow pretty much from the moment we arrived in Cape May, booked for a Sunday–Wednesday stay, we kept looking at each other and asking, “What were we thinking leaving midweek?” In the midst of planning, moving and rearranging a pandemic wedding, we weren’t thinking clearly, deciding to depart on Wednesday rather than Friday or Saturday.
We checked the weather forecast. A bit of rain on Wednesday, but otherwise perfect beach weather. We’d both gotten ahead a bit at work, so we could easily swing a few more days. But we hemmed and hawed and went back and forth on Sunday and Monday, coming up with reasons why we couldn’t extend our time away. One of us would say, “Let’s do it!” while the other would chime in and reason, “No, we have this and this.”
On Tuesday morning, with our toes in the sand, waves crashing and the sun shining, we picked up a local Cape May newspaper. We read Scott’s Aries horoscope, and it read, “You will take the week off to recover from the merrymaking of last weekend.” It felt like the universe was saying “STAY!” I called our bed and breakfast, and the next sign from above dropped into my lap. There was only one room available for two additional nights, and it was the room we were in. That was it; the decision was made for us, and we were extending our trip.
We settled a bit deeper into our beach chairs, smiled at each other and knew we’d made the right decision.

May 28, 2025Williamsburg Inn Review
You don’t have to love brass chandeliers or brocade to appreciate what Williamsburg Inn does best: delivering a polished, unpretentious stay amid America’s most iconic living history museum. This is where you check in for traditional luxury without feeling like you’re trapped in a time capsule. The Queen stayed here (twice), and so did Eisenhower, but you’re not here to make history. You’re here to enjoy it, on your own terms.

May 27, 2025Plan a Legendary Gathering in Honolulu
Myths and origin stories form a powerful framework for the history of Hawai‘i. Marking the horizon behind Honolulu, the ancient volcanic formation of Lē‘ahi — technically a volcanic tuff cone more commonly known to the world as Diamond Head — provides a constant physical reminder of the tales that shaped the history of this location. While researching legends for my Hawai‘i-based Dark Paradise Mysteries series (Kensington Books), I learned the tale of the demigod Maui, who used his enchanted fishing hook to reach into the sea to heave the Hawaiian islands, including Diamond Head, above the surface of the water.
