Earlier this year, United Airlines shored up its position as a leader among environmentally conscious airlines by signing a deal with World Energy.
World Energy, a Boston-based energy firm, is set to deliver up to 10 million gallons of sustainable biofuel to United Airlines over the next two years. United Airlines already uses the fuel on every flight departing from its hub in Los Angeles. The fuel results in a more than 60 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
As of late May, United Airlines was the only airline in the United States using sustainable fuel on a regular basis, and World Energy’s biofuel is produced from agricultural waste and received sustainability certification.
“Investing in sustainable aviation biofuel is one of the most effective measures a commercial airline can take to reduce its impact on the environment,” said Scott Kirby, president, United. “As leaders in this space, United and World Energy are setting an example for the industry on how innovators can work together to bring our customers, colleagues and communities toward a more sustainable future.”
The agreement is United’s latest step toward its commitment to cut emissions by 50 percent by 2050.
