A marine reserve, Cathedral Cove is a secluded beach accessed via a 30-minute hike through the bush. The reward is worth the effort, though, as you’re treated to beautiful, golden sandy beaches with dramatic rock formations and vivid blue waters. New Zealand’s tallest peak is Mount Cook, where the landscape is otherworldly and fantastic in every sense. Depending on your itinerary, you can hike the base of the mountain on accessible trails that take a few hours to complete or you can make a quick stop at Tasman Lake for a picturesque walk under an hour with views of Mount Cook and mammoth glaciers. The first official capital of New Zealand and one of the country’s first European settlements, Russell is small, but beautiful and historic. The coastal town features some of the oldest historic buildings in the country, some converted into shops and restaurants or retaining their original usage as churches. The town also still uses its 1843 street plan. Tongariro National Park is the oldest national park in New Zealand, but you may recognize it for a separate claim to fame — its Mount Ngauruhoe is Mount Doom in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The Clay Cliffs of Omarama were formed by melting glaciers more than a million years ago and now boast a somewhat alien appearance. See the area in the summer for lush greenery, vivid wildflowers and rushing glacier rivers.
