The U.S. State Department issued a new travel alert May 31. The alert addresses European travel in the upcoming summer months, as larger tourist numbers and popular events are cited as possible targets for terrorism. The State Department drew notice to the European Soccer Championship, June 10–July 10, and the Catholic Church’s World Youth Day celebration, July 26–July 31. France, which hosts the European Soccer Championship, extended its state of emergency through July 26 to cover both the event and the Tour de France, July 2–24. World Youth Day is expected to bring 2.5 million travelers to Krakow. In order to prepare for the event, Poland will impose strict border controls July 4–Aug. 2. U.S. citizens are advised to practice extra caution in public places, including public transportation, and to avoid crowded areas when possible. Obeying local authorities is recommended, as is keeping an eye on local media and news. Before traveling, create an emergency plan with fellow travelers and instruct non-traveling families and friends on how to reach you in the event of an attack.

May 14, 2024Alligators, Tarzan and the Creature from Black Lagoon in Wakulla Springs, Florida
Close to the side of my tour boat — make that very close — a mother alligator rests in the reedy shallows of the Wakulla Springs shoreline, her long, prehistoric-looking nose pointed in my direction. If she thinks I’m going to bother her fleet of small offspring, also visible near the shore, she is mistaken. I’m too busy looking for any relatives of Tarzan, or for the 1954 cult movie monster Creature from the Black Lagoon who might be lurking in the trees.
