Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom

Nov 29, 2013

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, the film based on President Nelson Mandela’s autobiography, opens in theaters today. Starring Idris Elba as Nelson Mandela and Naomie Harris as Winnie Mandela, the movie tells the story of Mandela’s coming of age, education, his experience in the African National Congress battling apartheid, his 27 years in prison and his ascension to presidency and work to rebuild the segregated society.

I had the opportunity to attend a screening of the film last week as a guest of South African Tourism. The film’s star, Idris Elba, was also in attendance. It was interesting watching a movie and knowing one of the actors was watching right along with you. His transformation on the screen as Mandela ages is impressive to watch.

I must admit, I was only vaguely familiar with Mandela’s life and the apartheid. Obviously, I knew the basics, but the film showed it all in such a visual, realistic manner, it made the point hit home much harder. It was educational for me, but the fast pace of the script kept me interested; looking around the theater, the audience was rapt. The movie covers a large span of years, but it is done in a way that touches on everything without dragging. The film keeps moving while providing a depth of understanding.

The Thanksgiving holiday is a popular time to see the newest releases at the movie theater, and if you are looking for a recommendation this weekend, consider Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. Here’s another review for you to check out before heading out to the theater.
