In mid-August, the Centers for Disease Control issued an official health advisory warning residents and travelers about a newly detected risk for mosquito-born Zika transmission in Miami Beach and Miami-Dade County. The CDC warns anyone visiting Miami Beach from July 14 onward is at risk. Global Traveler asked its intrepid, on-the-go readers their thoughts on the situation. Unsurprisingly, survey respondents overwhelmingly said they would not cancel travel plans to Zika-affected areas of the world. When asked about Miami in particular, a little more than one-third said they’d avoid the area, with the majority feeling remotely apathetic regarding Miami’s Zika threats. In fact, more than half of all respondents agreed they’re still willing to consider travel to southern Florida if a hotel or resort offers an unbeatable travel deal. Survey respondents were also asked how safe they feel in various parts of the country compared to different spots around the globe. While the U.S. South is voted the least safe out of the country’s four regions, it in no way compared to travelers’ feelings regarding safety in South America, Mexico and Africa, where those who felt comfortably safe were in the minority. The CDC asks pregnant women to avoid traveling to Miami Beach and the affected areas of Miami-Dade County. Those who travel to the area regardless are instructed to take preventative measures to avoid mosquito bites, as well as undergo testing for the virus. The CDC awarded the state of Florida more than $8 million to specifically fight the spread of Zika and for Zika response efforts. “We’re in the midst of mosquito season and expect more Zika infections in the days and months to come,” said Tom Frieden, director, CDC. “It’s difficult but important that pregnant women make every effort to avoid mosquito bites and avoid going to areas where Zika is spreading. Florida and Miami-Dade County are taking appropriate steps to control mosquitoes and protect pregnant women. It is difficult to predict how long active transmission will continue. CDC disease control experts are doing everything they can to support state and local control programs to stop the spread of Zika. Every community in the United States that has the Aedes Aegypti mosquito present must monitor for infections and work to control the mosquitoes.” Are you changing your domestic travel plans as a result of Zika reports?
