The new terminal at Norway’s Bergen Airport Flesland is a lofty example of design and efficiency, all housed in a sleek, modern structure with gorgeous Norwegian sense of place.

The main lobby features an enormous screen along one wall with Norwegian landscape scenes playing in a slow, calming loop that sets the tone for check-in and navigating security. Efficiency abounds, from self-check-in kiosks and bag drops to how flow has been designed to eliminate clusters, crowds and maintain movement. Clearly marked signage and a multitude of comfortable waiting areas and workstations add to the sense of ease.

The design was the result of an international architectural competition held in 2009, with the winning design allowing for the integration of a flexible terminal that connects seamlessly with the original, existing terminal. Construction commenced in 2014 and the new structure officially opened Aug. 17. Architects and consultants responsible for the design and its implementation are the Nordic Office of Architecture, COWI AS Team_T3 AS, Norconsult AS, Aas/Jakobsen, Cowi AS and Ingeniør Per Rasmussen AS.

Restrooms with private cabins have dispensers to sanitize seating areas, and motion-controlled water and soap that helps avoid over-contact with other surfaces. The slatted wood ceiling and wall areas in the main terminal suggest a forest setting, while views across the runway include mountains, forests and mist. Cross your fingers that you happen to be there while it’s raining — rain falling on the massive roof of the check-in area creates a kind of lullaby that’s the perfect pre-flight, stress-reducing therapy.
