The next generation of bullet train began testing in Japan last week. The Alfa-X Shinkansen can reach speeds of more than 400 kmph.

According to jrailpass.com, the new train will feature the longest nose in history, at 22 metres. The train also runs near silent and was designed with passenger comfort in mind first and foremost. The trains will run in the Tokoku and Hokkaido regions.

The train was also developed with environmental sustainability in mind. It will utilize mechanisms to reduce vertical and horizontal motion while the train is moving to reduce passenger discomfort.

According to CNN, the tests will take roughly three years to complete. If everything goes according to schedule, the trains will enter proper operation in 2030. Testing will go on after midnight on the line between Sendai and Aomori. Tests will operate about twice per week.

During standard trips, the train will run at about 360 kmph. The fastest commercial train in the world is in Shanghai, which runs using magnetic levitation.
