World Travel And Tourism Council Releases Report About Economy

The World Travel and Tourism Council, a London-based nonprofit researching the global effects of tourism, released a report last month that showed the impact of the industry on the world’s economy.

The report showed the travel and tourism industry added scores of jobs and contributed significantly to the global gross domestic product.

“Despite uncertainty in the global economy and specific challenges to travel and tourism last year, the sector grew by 3.1%, contributing a total of 9.8% to the global GDP,” David Scowsill, president and CEO, World Travel & Tourism Council, said in a statement. The rise comes despite global concerns of terrorism, airplane safety and virus like Zika and Ebola.

“Terror attacks, disease outbreaks, currency fluctuations and geopolitical challenges have impacted the sector at a country or regional level, but travel and tourism at the global level continues to produce another robust performance,” added Scowsill.

The growth is expected to continue, with the report predicting a 4 percent annual growth in the tourism industry globally over the next 10 years.
