The Civil Aviation Administration of China plans to build a second airport for Chengdu, the capital of southwest China’s Sichuan province.
The city’s only airport, Shuangliu International Airport, is the fifth-busiest hub in China, handling approximately 37.5 million passengers last year flying major carriers such as Lufthansa, British Airways, KLM, Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways.
Traffic forecasted to increase to 62 million annual passengers by 2020, outgrowing the 59-year-old airport’s current capacity of 50 million.
To cater to growing travel demand to the city, CAAC announced work on a second airport will begin by the end of this year at a site in Jianyang, located approximately 50 kilometres southeast of Chengdu, according to Xinhua.
The airport will offer three runways, 157 aircraft stands and a 600,000-square-metre passenger terminal. It is predicted to handle up to 40 million passengers per year by 2025.
Chengdu will become the third Chinese city to have two airports, joining Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Beijing Capital International Airport.
