A recent WalletHub study revealed the best places around the United States for celebrating Valentine’s Day. Comparing the largest 100 U.S. cities across 23 metrics (such as number of florists, weather forecast and dining costs), the study found San Francisco took the top spot as best destination to spend the holiday.

The remaining top 10 are, in order: San Diego, Las Vegas, Orlando, Chicago, New York, Portland, Seattle, Honolulu and Los Angeles.

A few other facts the study picked up on include the city with the highest average ticket prices for Valentine’s Day parties (Los Angeles) compared to the lowest (Omaha); the most expensive three-course meals for two (Detroit) compared to the most affordable (Fremont); the most jewelry stores per capita (New York); the most florists per capita (also New York); the most chocolate shops per capita (San Francisco); and the best weather forecast for Valentine’s Day (Henderson, Nev.).

Beyond the destination-related data, WalletHub also reported Americans spend an average $143.56 on Valentines Day, with $19.5 billion projected in U.S. Valentine’s Day spending this year. Approximately $3.7 billion of that is spent by the 35 percent of couples planning a Valentine’s Day date (with an average date cost of $170.53). A little more than one-third purchase their significant other a gift at a discount store, with men spending twice as much as women. Nearly all Americans polled (94 percent) want to receive candy or chocolate. However, almost half (45 percent) of adults do not plan on celebrating the holiday at all, though 53 percent of women say they would break up with their significant other if they did not receive a gift for Valentine’s Day. A projected 9 million marriage proposals are planned for this Wednesday.
