Moab’s dramatic red rock landscape hosts the annual Moab Music Festival from Aug. 29–Sept. 9. The dozen-plus performances include classical, jazz and traditional music from a roster of artists including Christopher Layer on flute and bagpipes; pianist Timothy Long; Arnaud Sussmann on viola and violin; composer and pianist Juantio Becenti; baritone Adrian Rosas; guitarist Matt Munisteri and Dennis Lichtman on fiddle, clarinet and mandolin. Concerts are held in a variety of outdoor venues, with Grotto Concerts performed in a wilderness grotto on the Colorado River, reachable by boat.
Now in its 21st year, the New York-based husband and wife musical team of violist Leslie Tomkins, and Michael Barrett, a pianist and conductor, founded the festival. An ongoing goal of the festival is its outreach to Grand County schoolchildren. Festival musicians participate in assemblies for students, and an artist-in-residence program offers educational opportunities during other times of the year.
