United Airlines developed a new tool that makes it more likely for connecting passengers to make it to their next flight, even with a tight layover.
For United customers with tight connections, United’s ConnectionSaver technology scans soon-to-depart flights to determine whether the flight can be held without resulting in too much delay.
The tool considers transit time from gate to gate when recommending whether the flight crew should hold the flight for any connecting passengers that may barely make it before the doors close.
During its first four months of operation at Denver International Airport and Chicago O’Hare International Airport, more than 14,000 United travelers (passengers that otherwise may have missed flights due to tight connections) were able to make flights thanks to the tool’s technology.
When passengers with these connections land on their first flight, they receive a text message that informs them of the departure gate number for their next flight, the approximate time it will take them to travel to the gate and turn-by-turn directions to get there in the most efficient time.
