Could driver-less cars be the next major automobile innovation? With Tesla and Google testing such inventions, this may just be in the near future.

Now, the United Kingdom is adding interest to the speculation. Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne announced last month the vehicles will begin trials on local roads in the U.K. this year. In 2017, they’ll hit major motorways, with the goal of making them widely available by 2020.

“Driverless cars could represent the most fundamental change to transport since the invention of the internal combustion engine,” Osborne said in a statement.

“Naturally we need to ensure safety, and that’s what the trials we are introducing will test. If successful, we could see driverless cars available for sale and on Britain’s roads, boosting UK jobs and productivity,” he said.

To achieve his vision, the United Kingdom will have to reverse regulations that forbid driver-less cars from operating on motorways. Osborne also wants to spend $21.6 million to create a “connected corridor” from London to Dover that will allow the cars to communicate wirelessly and will enable trials of “truck platooning,” the process of automated trucks moving close to one another to save space.
