United Airlines now offers travelers non-stop service between San Francisco (SFO) and Auckland (AUK). The inaugural service marks the beginning of United’s venture agreement with Air New Zealand.
“Our new joint venture with Air New Zealand allows both airlines to optimize our trans-Pacific schedules and offer customers more choice and convenience when traveling between the United States and New Zealand. Our customers want new ways to access New Zealand and destinations beyond and our relationship with Air New Zealand allows customers to plan seamless travel throughout the South Pacific,” said Jim Compton, vice chairman and chief revenue officer, United Airlines.
“We know that New Zealand is a popular destination for American travelers. By working more closely with such a strong carrier like United Airlines, we look forward to welcoming even more American visitors to enjoy our unique Kiwi tourism experience,” said Cam Wallace, chief sales and commercial officer, Air New Zealand.
The inaugural flight partnered with the Asia and Pacific Initiative to Reduce Emissions to demonstrate United’s environmental leadership. A Boeing 787-8 aircraft serviced the inaugural flight; the aircraft is built from lightweight composites and an improved aerodynamic system for faster, further, more efficient flights. The partnership also incorporated optimal flight path support and reroutes to optimize efficiency, as well as expedited taxi upon arrival.
The flight departs San Francisco three times weekly at 10:45 p.m., arriving in Auckland at 6:55 a.m. two days later. Returning flights depart Auckland at 1:20 p.m. daily, arriving in San Francisco at 6:40 a.m. the same day. Flight times are approximately 13 hours.
Under United and Air New Zealand’s partnership, Air New Zealand operates a flight on the same route, with daily service between the two cities. Flights depart San Francisco at 9:45 p.m., arriving in Auckland at 5:35 a.m., two days later. Return flights depart Auckland at 7:45 p.m., and arrive in San Francisco at 12:45 p.m., the same day.

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
