United Airlines introduced a new business class, Polaris, which aims to be a “reimagined, sleep-enhancing, departure-to-landing experience for intercontinental travelers,” according to a press release on the development. “United Polaris will change the game in international business travel with an exceptional level of relaxation and comfort throughout our customers’ journeys,” said Oscar Munoz, president and CEO, United Airlines. “This completely reconceived experience exemplifies the new spirit of United and the innovation, excitement and operational momentum across our airline.” The airline is outfitting its wide-body planes with seats made custom for the company and found nowhere else. The seats offer a lie-flat design and up to 6-foot by 6-inches of bed space. The suite-like pods will feature a Do Not Disturb sign, mood lighting, one-touch lumbar support, several storage areas, multiple surfaces for dining and working, a 16-inch HD screen and electronic privacy dividers. The new class comes as the result of 12,000 hours of research and development by the airlines. Saks Fifth Avenue has designed custom bedding, and Polaris passengers can request slippers on all flights and pajamas on flights longer than 12 hours. United also changed its dining for Polaris passengers — expect a beverage and chocolate before departure, an upgraded wine selection and better food.
