Uber will buy 24,000 Volvo XC90 SUVs 2019–2021 as it expands its self-driving car fleet. Uber will add its own sensors and software after it receives the cars in the $1.4 billion deal.
“This new agreement puts us on a path toward mass-produced, self-driving vehicles at scale,” said Jeff Miller, head of auto alliances, Uber. “The more people working on the problem, we’ll get there faster and with better, safer, more reliable systems.”
Uber is currently testing out self-driving XC90s in Arizona, Pittsburgh and San Francisco, but they currently have human safety drivers on board. In the future, the cars will not have these back-up drivers.
Uber also announced new features to improve the pick-up process, such as a live location feature and windshield colors. The company also recently added a new tipping feature and the ability to add multiple stops to a single trip.
