Uber received preliminary authorization to settle with customers over a dispute involving tipping — and it will cost the ride-share company about $384,000.

According to Bloomberg Technology, Uber will “settle claims it misled consumers by charging them a 20 percent ‘gratuity’ even though drivers got only about half of it.”

In response to the allegations, San Francisco’s U.S. District Judge Edward Chen granted Uber permission to “pay about $384,000 for 47,000 users of the ride hailing company’s app.”

That’s much less than the company actually raked in from skimming the driver tips, though; Uber apparently collected around $860,000.

So, do riders have to tip Lyft and Uber drivers? Travel Pulse explored the issue a few months ago and determined tipping is nice but not expected. “Drivers don’t expect a tip at all, and those who we spoke to wouldn’t ding your rating just because you get out of the car without tossing some cash their way. With that said, they are beyond appreciative if you do, and, contrary to when Uber started, the drivers will indeed accept the gratuity,” the article read.
