To follow the famed #DeleteUber, along with several other incidents, Uber the ride-hailing company, recently suspended its services in Taiwan. Uber explains that despite various steps taken to placate officials, it will step aside to reexamine its presence in the nation.

The halt of services came after Uber racked up $49.9 million in fines a month after an amendment to a law banning unlicensed taxi services was implemented. In Taiwan, taxi companies are legally required to be domestically owned and operated; however, Uber violates that law, despite efforts to become legal in the province. Over the course of the four years since its launch in 2013, about 1 million people in Taiwan used Uber for more than 15 million trips, with 10,000 drivers.

The Uber Taiwan team helped put steps in place to garner its official acceptance on the island. The service acknowledges the surging penalties on its drivers and ceased to offer its services Feb. 10. The fines Uber Taiwan received proved too much for the brand, pulling the plug on its presence in the four cities it served.

Uber faced pushback from regulators and drivers in many other markets, who pulled out of China last August and suspended its taxi and van services in Hong Kong.
