The U.S. Department of State issued a new travel warning March 29, warning citizens against travel to southeastern Turkey. The department also ordered all family members of government employees at the U.S. Consulate in Adana and U.S. government civilians in İzmir and Mugla to leave the country. The U.S. Consulate in Adana will remain open. All government travel to Turkey is limited to “mission-critical” travel only.
The department reports U.S. tourists have been targeted by both international and indigenous terrorist groups. They recommend tourists particularly steer clear of the Turkey-Syria border. Travelers are also advised to stay away from crowded tourist attractions and other busy areas, exercise caution in public, avoid political gatherings, choose secure accommodations and stay up to date on regional and local news.
