After a massive renovation project, Tan Son Nhat International Airport is expected to reach 48 million passengers annually, nearly doubling its current capacity. The project is crucial if the airport wants to meet the rapidly increasing demands of domestic and international travellers through the important Asian hub.
The Ho Chi Minh City hub, designed to handle 25 million passengers per year, is currently operating above capacity with 31 million passengers expected this year.
The project is expected to take eight years and will include the development of two new terminals, expansion of existing terminals and an additional runway. The expansion of the existing T2 Terminal will accommodate 3 million additional passengers per year, bringing the airport’s total capacity to 10 million passengers.
Construction on the first new terminal will begin in the coming months, and the capacity is expected to reach 38 million passengers by 2019, followed by a fourth terminal allowing for an additional 10 million passengers per year.
