A new policy change mandates the Transportation Security Administration can require airport passengers to undergo electronic body scans.

The Department of Homeland Security revised the Advanced Imagery Technology protocols for the TSA to no longer allow passengers to opt out of electronic scans through machines at checkpoints. Prior to the change, people could choose to undergo a physical screening.

“While passengers may generally decline AIT screening in favor of physical screening, TSA may direct mandatory AIT screening for some passengers,” the DHS announced in a policy update this month.

The AIT machines have sparked controversy over concerns of privacy and their effectiveness compared to simple walk-through metal detectors.

Even with the change, the opt-out rule has not been entirely eliminated and passengers can still ask for a physical screening.

“Passengers undergoing screening will still have the option to decline an AIT screening in favor of a physical screening,” said Mike England, spokesperson, TSA. “However, some passengers will still be required to undergo AIT screenings as warranted by security considerations in order to safeguard transportation security.”
