June 21–Jan. 6, 2019, the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., presents “Trevor Paglen: Sites Unseen.” Working in photography and imagery that’s a mixture of art, science and geography, Paglen’s work is thought provoking to the extreme, suggesting the viewer is witnessing something he or she was never meant to observe.
Pieces inviting questions regarding privacy and the role of surveillance in our modern world include the 2010 chromogenic print “STSS-1 and Two Unidentified Spacecraft over Carson City (Space Tracking and Surveillance System, USA 205)”. Paglen’s credentials are impressive: He holds a BA from U.C. Berkeley, an MFA from the Art Institute of Chicago and a Ph.D. in geography from U.C. Berkeley.
