A recent global study from Sabre revealed travelers are willing to spend $100 on airline ancillaries to personalize their travel experience. From better seats and food to more legroom, travelers from 20 countries shared how much and on what they are willing to spend on airline extras.
The study found 80 percent of travelers purchased supplemental airline offerings on their last trip, spent an average of $62 and would spend up to $99. What are global travelers spending the extra money on? First and foremost, comfort, followed by conveniences and entertainment.
Travelers are willing to spend 11 percent more on cabin class upgrades, onboard food and beverage, preferred seating and extra legroom. Additionally, they are willing to spend 9 percent more on in-flight WiFi and extra checked baggage. Ancillaries on which travelers are willing to spend more varied per region. Americans and Europeans opted for more legroom and preferred seating; Latin Americans are more willing to pay for onboard WiFi, Asia Pacific travelers chose extra checked baggage, and African and Middle Eastern travelers are willing to pay extra for onboard food and beverages and fast-track security.
Additional findings showed differences in what people from different regions of the world would spend on airline ancillaries. For example, survey participants from Africa were willing to spend $144 and also spent more than any other region on their most recent flight, at $95. Following African travelers, Latin Americans were willing to spend $114, Middle Eastern travelers $91, North American travelers $88, European travelers $82, and Asia Pacific travelers $76. North American travelers reportedly spent the least amount of money on airline ancillaries on their last trip with extra fees coming in at $44.
“Airlines know what their travelers want based on the data they have of past purchases. Yet so much of this data remains unused today. However, by leveraging the latest technology, airlines can unlock this data and show they know their travelers by offering the right products at the right time and tailoring a personalized experience that will improve customer loyalty and generate much-needed revenue,” said Dino Gelmetti, vice president EMEA, airline solutions, Sabre.
Air travel does not always provide the ideal experience, but airline extras can make it more bearable — that is, if you’re willing to pay for them.
