When it comes to hotel etiquette, travelers have a varied idea what is or isn’t expected, both on the part of the hotel and the guest. A new survey from Expedia reveals which rude behaviors enrage travelers the most, as well as how many bend the rules to fit their own agenda. More than 1,000 survey respondents were asked to rank annoying hotel guest behaviors and, unsurprisingly, fellow guests with misbehaving and bothersome children are ranked the worst. Close behind are those who are a little too loud and rambunctious in the hallways. Noise is a popular annoyance, with almost one-fifth of respondents admitting they’ll ask to move rooms if assigned next to someone noisy. The least offensive hotel guests are those who are overly talkative in the elevator or intoxicated in the hotel bar. “The hotel experience is one that many people love,” said John Morrey, vice president and general manager, Expedia.com. “Fresh towels, a comfortable made bed, room service at the ready, it can be a deeply enjoyable experience. But it’s vital to remember that you’re not staying there by yourself, you are surrounded by hundreds of people who have paid to share that space. Conscientiousness makes all the difference.” Travelers are divided on the issue of tipping. About 30 percent do not tip any member of the hotel staff during their stay. The most-tipped staff members are housekeepers, followed by room service attendants, valets, porters and, lastly, concierges. When it comes to bad behavior, 11 percent of travelers bring more than their fair share of guests per room; 10 percent steal items from the hotel; and 4 percent smoke in non-smoking guestrooms. A little more than 30 percent admit to booking a hotel room for the sole reason of meeting someone for a casual encounter. Regardless of guest behavior, just shy of 100 percent of travelers believe hotels should provide complimentary WiFi. Travelers rank free WiFi as more important than a property’s location or free parking. Do you agree misbehaving children and noisy adults are the worst hotel guests? What’s your personal policy on tipping hotel staff? Do you believe all hotels should provide complimentary WiFi? Email us and let us know. Please include your full name and location with your email.
