Travelers Are Going Beyond the Beach This Summer

Marriott International announced findings from its annual U.S. Summer Travel Trends Report 2017, based on analysis of nearly 2 million Marriott.com searches and bookings in April and May for travel between the Memorial Day and Labor Day holiday weekends.

“This summer, travelers are looking beyond typical beach-centric destinations and considering places like Orlando, New York, Chicago and New Orleans to explore with their families and friends,” said Brian King, global officer, digital, distribution and global sales, Marriott International. “They’re also more eager this year than last year to bring their pets, stay a little longer and seek out good value.”

When it comes to celebrating summer, Marriott’s customers are turning more toward cities than beaches, a surprising finding.

The top five most-searched destinations for Memorial Day were Orlando; New York; Washington, D.C.; Chicago; and San Diego. The most searched destinations for Independence Day reflect a desire to celebrate in cities rather than beaches, with top searches including New Orleans, New York, Orlando, Chicago and San Diego.

In addition to U.S. summer escapes, the report reveals significant growth outside U.S. borders on holiday weekends. For Memorial Day and July 4th weekend, travelers showed interest in going to the Caribbean and Latin America, with bookings at hotels in Aruba, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The report also finds Americans opt for longer trips this year as compared to last year. As July 4 falls on a Tuesday this year, Marriott’s bookings for five-day stays increased 67 percent from last year.

Another interesting trend revealed in the study is continued interest in customers seeking summer deals that include items such as breakfast, parking or free WiFi. Customers booked special offer rates about 7 percent more often for holiday weekend vacations than their non-holiday trips.

Where are you planning to spend your holiday weekends this summer? Do you prefer the city or the beach for holidays like Independence Day and Labor Day? Where did you spend this past Memorial Day? Email us and let us know. Please include your full name and location with your email.
