Titanic Spa In England’s West Yorkshire Is Both Green And Serene

Mar 17, 2013
Daily / Feature

There’s no sinking feeling here — in addition to an enormous selection of luxurious spa treatments, Titanic’s green credentials include recycling on a major scale. Just for starters, the hefty brick building housing the spa, fitness complex and private apartments was once a flourishing textile mill.

Located on the edge of the Pennines northeast of Manchester in Huddersfield, the building’s name derives from its year of construction, 1911, which also saw the launch of the RMS Titanic, and was deliberately selected to reflect the same sense of awe attached to both the enormous ship and major-scale mill. Repurposed with residential space and a full-service spa, the strong eco focus includes a chlorine-free, salt-regulated pool, ozone Otex Laundry system, photovoltaic solar energy system, staff uniforms made of soft bamboo fabric, and a heat and power unit that runs on wood chips manufactured from sustainably managed forests.

Pre-treatment, guests wait in the Wave Room, with curved walls and woven carpets reflective of the ocean floor; post-therapy, there’s a sensory Heat Experience with self-applied organic mud, a thermal steam chamber, and cleansing tropical rain shower. The Titanic Heat and Ice Experience includes a circuit with saunas, steam baths, aromatherapy chambers, and water experiences of varying intensity.

High-Spirited Hong Kong: The Dynamic Hub Embraces Its Maritime History and Culture

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
