Officials warn travelers of increased theft threats during the 2016 Olympic Games. Tourists outwardly displaying wallets, cell phones and jewelry are most at risk, especially when venturing outside predetermined Olympic- and tourist-friendly zones.

“A total of 85,000 security personnel will be deployed in Olympic venues and tourist areas, double the number mobilized during the London 2012 Olympics, and more than the 2014 Brazil World Cup. IHS assesses that this saturation of security force deployment will be effective in containing crime, unrest and vandalism during the Olympics, as was the case during the World Cup,” said Carlos Caicedo, senior principal analyst, IHS Country Risk.

Spots to remain particularly alert include downtown Rio, near metro stations, primary hotel areas and beach promenades. Despite the increased risk of theft, travelers are assured the risk of homicide is still quite low, as most victims are locals and incidents occurring in poverty-stricken areas.

The total cost of the Rio Olympic Games comes out to approximately $4.1 billion, with 70 percent of funds privately donated. The federal government is allocating $850 million to pay public servants and police officers who have not been paid since May in an attempt to avoid a police strike during the Games.
