Toronto is central to film and television production and to a variety of finance, technology, telecommunication and manufacturing industries. It’s a city attracting more than 25 million tourists annually. Of the 14 million overnight visitors in 2015, almost 500,000 came for the Toronto International Film Festival at the TIFF Bell Lightbox. After Cannes, it’s the world’s second-largest film festival, with 399 screenings in 2015.The SoHo Metropolitan Hotel The city’s dynamic performing arts culture is centered in a vibrant entertainment district downtown, adjacent to the SoHo Metropolitan Hotel, within walking distance of many of Toronto’s live performance venues — from theaters, concerts, ballets, operas and nightclubs to a variety of cool restaurants. The hotel is also popular among sports fans, within walking distance of Rogers Centre and a short taxi ride from Air Canada Centre. The 89-guestroom member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts is located on four floors of a 17-floor building that also houses condominiums. Contemporary rooms average 600 square feet and incorporate dressing rooms, large closets and floor-to-ceiling windows with panoramic views of the cityscape. State-of-the-art amenities range from heated bathroom flooring to complimentary high-speed internet to motorized drapes and remote control lighting. There’s a fully staffed business center and a 10,000-square-foot fitness center with a whirlpool tub, steam room and lap pool. Frette linens, Molton Brown bath amenities and down duvets add luxury touches. The SoHo Metropolitan HotelAmong the 17 executive suites, the most lavish is a 4,000-square-foot, three-story SoHo Penthouse suite with an en-suite glass elevator on the 15th floor. Along with 39 of the hotel rooms, the penthouse suite boasts some of the best views of downtown Toronto’s CN Tower, especially from its 1,400-square-foot rooftop terrace with a hot tub and barbecue. The suite features a dining room, living room, library, two fireplaces, kitchen plus a kitchenette and a Kohler infinity tub that fills from the ceiling. One hotel dining option showcases culinary superstar Susur Lee’s nouvelle Chinoise at Luckee Restaurant and Bar, where dim sum is available all day and celebrity visitors are seen. Another, Wahlburgers Canada, is a super-casual eatery where fans of the Wahlberg brothers gather, many for burgers and beer. Senses is a 28-seat bakery café, where hotel guests and condominium owners mingle over coffee. The hotel staff features concierges, valets, porters, chefs, personal trainers and massage therapists. On weekday mornings, complimentary car service transports guests from the hotel to downtown, including Billy Bishop City Centre Airport.

Plan a Legendary Gathering in Honolulu

Myths and origin stories form a powerful framework for the history of Hawai‘i. Marking the horizon behind Honolulu, the ancient volcanic formation of Lē‘ahi — technically a volcanic tuff cone more commonly known to the world as Diamond Head — provides a constant physical reminder of the tales that shaped the history of this location. While researching legends for my Hawai‘i-based Dark Paradise Mysteries series (Kensington Books), I learned the tale of the demigod Maui, who used his enchanted fishing hook to reach into the sea to heave the Hawaiian islands, including Diamond Head, above the surface of the water.
