Memphis boasts some of the most unique attractions in America, and The Peabody is one of them. The historic property encompasses an entire city block. On the Thursday evening we arrived, the lobby/bar was filled with people sitting on sofas and at tables enjoying cocktails or concluding business. At check-in, we were pleasantly distracted by the family beside us, who were beaming when the staff presented them with a doggie bowl and a treat for their canine companion.

People were lining up to ride an elevator to the hotel’s rooftop party. Held every Thursday night 6–10 p.m. April through August, the crowd dances to local bands, sips cool drinks and watches the sun set over the Mississippi River. Hotel guests arriving before 7 p.m. are admitted for free.

The hotel has 464 guestrooms and suites. Our deluxe room was located on the same floor as the Peabody Club, which includes a welcome cocktail, complimentary valet parking, beverages, hors d’oeuvres and a continental breakfast. A well-informed staff member assisted us with directions and shared her favorite gardening tips before our drive to the Memphis Botanic Garden.

The newly refurbished guestroom still maintains a historic feel, which we adore. The large room contained a king-sized bed, a 42-inch wide television and a writing desk, complete with personalized hotel stationery with our name printed at the top. Inside the walk-in closet, we found an umbrella, safe and ironing board.

We were drawn to the hotel’s impressive lobby where the famous ducks can be found contentedly swimming throughout the day. The Peabody Duck March is one of the most popular attractions in Memphis. Each day at 11 a.m., five North American mallards parade across a red carpet and into the imported Italian marble fountain. At 5 p.m., the ducks march back to their $200,000 rooftop palace. Many dignitaries such as Peter Frampton, Larry King and Oprah Winfrey have served as Honorary Duckmasters.

While you won’t find any duck selections on the hotel restaurant menus, there are other delectable entrées. The elegant Chez Philippe restaurant serves French cuisine at dinner and during afternoon tea. Reservations are definitely recommended at this Forbes Four Star- and AAA Four Diamond-rated restaurant. Enjoy a more casual atmosphere at the Capriccio Grill, an Italian steakhouse open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For guests needing a quick bite, the Peabody Deli & Desserts opens at 6 a.m. It’s also the place to find adorable duck-shaped frosted cookies.

The first floor of The Peabody is home to a variety of unique shops — bring home a pink toy Cadillac, vintage clothing or a duck-handle umbrella. Another way to relax is at the hotel’s spa or indoor heated pool.

The Peabody is located in the heart of downtown Memphis, an easy walk to Beale Street, AutoZone Park, Memphis Cook Convention Center, FedEx Forum and Sun Studios. In the evening, the hotel lobby is an excellent place to unwind with a glass of wine and listen to live piano music. If you like a grand hotel with Southern sophistication, The Peabody is the place to stay when visiting Memphis.
