Eager to experience one of my hometown’s newer hot spots, I arranged an afternoon of pampering at The Logan Spa at The Logan Philadelphia, a Curio Collection by Hilton hotel. Formerly The Four Seasons Philadelphia, the hotel occupies prime real estate on Logan Square by the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The new incarnation of the hotel space incorporates the city’s history, creating a social hub overflowing with local touches.
Before checking in at the spa, I explored a bit. The artwork in the hotel is worth a serious perusal, boasting creations from local artists inspired by the city’s history. A figure eight-shaped chandelier in the entryway boasts the photos of people influential in the development of Philadelphia, yet it looks cool and modern. The on-site Urban Farmer brings a farm-to-table menu with an eclectic décor. Other on-site spots to enjoy include the ground-level bar, The Commons, situated immediately inside the entrance; a hidden lounge area with a billiard table, comfortable seating and a quiet vibe; extensive meeting space; and Assembly, the rooftop bar and lounge offering not only stunning views of the parkway but also an impressive menu of small bites and creative cocktails. Assembly was a much-needed addition to the Philadelphia nightlife scene.
I didn’t dawdle for long, as the spa was calling my name. On the heels of a few trips, preparing for a move and weeks of getting back into a regular yoga routine, I was ready for a few quiet hours of relaxation and reflection. Immediately upon entering, I was greeted by the most magnificent scent from a mango-coconut candle burning on the reception desk.
After I filled out some paperwork in a smaller sitting area to the right of reception, the attendant escorted me to the women’s locker room. I was surprised by the relatively compact size of the locker room; albeit small, it did not lack any of the standard amenities expected. It also felt like I had the entire area to myself, a trend that continued throughout my treatment, as I did not see another person aside from my attendant for the duration of my visit. The indoor pool and well-equipped fitness center are available for use to guests of the spa.
While I tend to be more of a massage gal, I opted for the 80-minute HydraFacial, a treatment performed using a hightech, professional facial and microdermabrasion system. Designed to treat a number of facial issues, the machine uses a patented tip for deep cleansing, a gentle acid peel and painless extractions. I know, I was skeptical, too, but the extractions really were painless.
My therapist and aesthetician, Debbie, walked me through the six-step process, thoroughly explaining the benefits of each step, the antioxidants and hydrating hyaluronic acids used and more about the science and technology of the system. The Logan Philadelphia is one of only two luxury spas in the city using the technology.
The patented Vortex-Fusion serum delivery system and HydroPeel Tips set the facial experience apart from others. The treatment cleanses, exfoliates and extracts while replenishing nutrients to the skin, including peptides. To begin, Vortex- Exfoliation uses Active-4 serum to remove dead skin cells before the Vortex-Peel’s GlySal serum delivers the benefits of a peel without the post-peel scaling. During the Vortex-Extraction, automated suction cleans pores with Beta-HD serum. Targeted skin solutions are addressed during the Vortex- Boost, and the Vortex-Fusion uses Antiox+ serum to nourish and protect skin.
The constant hum of the machine might prove a bit of a distraction for some, as can some of the lighting aspects, but I felt the benefits immediately. As soon as Debbie began, my skin seemed to tingle and respond to the treatment. For weeks after, my face felt smoother, less oily and softer than ever before. My complexion brightened and my dark circles lightened.
True relaxation came as the final step of the HydraFacial concluded and the head, scalp, neck and shoulder massage started.
The Logan Spa offers a range of therapies, from massages and skincare — including the Ultra Micro Current Facial, available exclusively — to full-body treatments and nail and waxing services.
I wrapped up my spa day experience on a cushioned lounger in a darkened room sipping a glass of Champagne and leafing through the pages of a local magazine. If one thing is certain, it’s The Logan Philadelphia, its high-end amenities and its unique vibe are making a mark on the City of Brotherly Love.
