As of November 2022, Rohrkopfhutte (mountain hut) on Germany’s Tegelberg mountain reopened, and the dream view from the terrace, of the castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau and the stunning Schwangauer Alpsee, can be seen in the valley below.

Located between the Allgäu and Ammer mountains, the area has been a popular destination for excursions and hikes since the beginning. But now, Rohrkopfhütte, 4,330 feet above sea level, has a new lease on life. As long-term managers of the mountain hut, the Thurm family, who also manage Hotel Das Rüebezahl in Schwangau, five miles down the mountain by car (20 minutes), extensively renovated and modernized the mountain venue, while maintaining the traditional Bavarian ambiance.

The furniture is partially recycled from the original wood, and bathroom access was redesigned during the renovation. Guests will find traditional dishes interpreted in a modern way on the menu, such as bread dumpling carpaccio or pretzel tarte flambée. Exceptional highlights at Rohrkopfhütte include delicious fondue, evenings at the hut and the mountain breakfast. The hut is open all year and can be used for parties and events. Beyond the extraordinary cuisine, guests can experience the stunning views of the mountain.

Mountains, rivers and lakes mark the landscape around Schwangau, where the Thurm family has ran Hotel Das Rüebezahl since 1959. Guests can enjoy many of the hotel’s amenities, including time in the spa, as well as traditional Bavarian and regional cuisine, including lentil stew, sausage salad, Bavarian cheese spaetzle, knuckle of ham, goulash of deer and apple strudel.           Das Rüebezahl is the ideal starting point for many year-round activities, including winter skiing and summer or fall hiking from the hotel to Rohrkopfhütte using mountain trails.

Per night rates for two people, with breakfast, start at approximately $365 in winter and $387 in summer.

High-Spirited Hong Kong: The Dynamic Hub Embraces Its Maritime History and Culture

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.

Why Japan Is Best Explored by Sea with Princess

Japan is a destination that rewards repeat visits because no two regions — or seasons —  feel quite the same. One moment, you’re wandering through centuries-old geisha districts in Kanazawa. The next, you’re watching neon reflections dance across Tokyo streets long after midnight.

The Art of Balance in Seoul: Beyond the Boardroom

The value of a destination is no longer defined solely by infrastructure, efficiency or scale. Increasingly, it is measured by a city’s ability to balance productivity with well-being — creating opportunities for focus, restoration and more meaningful connections.
