Thailand’s government recently announced plan approval for a massive renovation project for the country’s airports.
According to The Bangkok Post, Thailand’s Industry Minister confirmed a multi-billion-dollar plan to upgrade and expand airports throughout the country, including Phuket (HKT), Chiang Mai (CNX), Krabi (KBV), Suvarnabhumi (BKK), Don Mueang (DMK) and U-Tapao (UTP), in addition to ten mid-sized regional hubs and a series of smaller city airports.
The plan calls for $11.6 billion to be invested over the next 10 years, which will double annual passenger airport capacity from 130 million to 277 million.
The project comes at a good time, as the number of foreign tourists to Thailand hit a record 32.6 million last year, and the government expects 35 million travellers this year.
